MTB Protex Bike Frame Protection Film is high performance paint protection films that add a virtually invisible layer of protection from stone chips, gravel damage and everyday wear and tear to your bike frame. The protection film can be added to the most vulnerable parts of your bike, i.e top tube, down tube, chain stays, etc. thereby protecting it from damage by forming an invisible protective shield The bike frame protection kits are available in both transparent gloss and matt depending on your preferences. Therefore, providing you with to the perfect look to compliment and preserve the colourway of your bike The kits have been custom cut to provide the optimum level of protection for your bike frame. Also it can be easily cut and trimmed during application to ensure a perfect fit for your particular bike. The kits are also available in multiple custom cut sizes thereby providing an almost bespoke fitting to the contours and tube sizing on your bike. The paintwork protection film can be applied either as either a dry or wet application and can be used for partial and full wraps of your bike. Due to the special pressure sensitive nature of the adhesive on the film, the tape can be lightly applied and repositioned before the final pressure and application of the tape takes place. The take can be easily removed months or years later, without leaving any residue on your frame. As long as some simple rules are used and a little heat from a hairdryer will also help this process.
  • What are the Main Differences Between Using a Wet or Dry Application Method for the Bike Frame Protection Film?
MTB Protex Bike Frame Protection Film is a great way to keep your bike frame looking new and protect it from scratches, chips, and other types of damage. There are two main methods for applying paint protection film: wet and dry. The wet method involves applying a solution of water and soap to the bike frame before applying the film. This solution allows the film to be adjusted before it is permanently adhered to the bike frame’s surface. The wet method is generally preferred because it allows for a more forgiving and easier installation process. However, it can take longer to dry and requires more attention to detail during the installation process to ensure that there are no bubbles or creases. On the other hand, the dry method involves applying the film directly to the bike frame’s surface without any additional solution. Using this method is typically more difficult to adjust the film once it has been applied. The dry method is faster and easier than the wet method, but it requires a higher level of skill and experience to ensure a smooth and seamless installation. Ultimately, the choice between the wet and dry methods depends on the amount of time and patience you wish to use and the level of skill and experience of the installer. Both methods can provide excellent protection for your bike frame’s paint, as long as they are installed correctly.
  • What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of the Wet Application Method?
Advantages: Allows for easier adjustments during installation Provides a more forgiving installation process Helps prevent air bubbles and creases in the film Can be used for larger areas without compromising the quality of the installation Disadvantages: Takes longer to dry than the dry application method Requires more attention to detail during the installation process May require additional cleaning after installation to remove excess solution and residue
  • What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of the Dry Application Method?
Advantages: Faster and easier than the wet application method Requires less skill and experience to apply Can be used for smaller areas where adjustment is not necessary Disadvantages: More difficult to adjust the film once it has been applied Requires a higher level of skill and experience to ensure a smooth and seamless installation Air bubbles and creases are more likely to occur during installation May result in a lower quality installation if not done correctly.
  • Terms of Use
The tape is only for the exclusive use on bike surfaces. The tape is designed to be safe to use and will not deteriorate or degenerate a correctly applied and fully cured paint and lacquered surface. It is essential that the correct application and removal instructions are followed, any type of damage is solely and exclusively the responsibility of the installer. A test application should be carried out before the final application and adhesion of the tape checked after leaving for 24 hours to ensure the surface is correctly prepared and cured. The tape must be bonded to a surface that is free of dirt, dust, grease, and any other debris otherwise the adhesive strength of the tape maybe impaired. Before removing the tape warm it up using a hair dryer, carefully lift the tape at one corner, slowly and carefully pull the tape to remove it from the surface. We recommend to continue using a hair dryer during the removal process. No liability or responsibility is accepted for damage caused to the frame or components of the bike during the application or removal of the tape. The processes involved in the manufacturing, application and curing of paint, lacquers, enamels, etc. for the bike frame and components are completely foreign to the supplier and therefore cannot guarantee when removing the tape that the surface remains intact.
  • Bike Preparation
Before you start to apply the bike frame protection kit you must ensure the following: The paintwork on your bike frame is original, fully cured, and intact You have all the necessary tools to hand The environment or place you will be applying the film to your bike is well light, dust free and at a constant temperature of between 17 and 24C That you do not remove the backing paper until you have placed the vinyl against your frame to test for sizing Any cuts or amendments to shapes/sizes should be completed prior to placing the adhesive side of the vinyl to the bike frame
  • Cleaning Your Bike
Thoroughly clean and degrease your bike frame where you intend to apply the bike frame protection film. Do not use a shampoo with any added waxes or coatings. Any remaining dirt on the frame would still be visible after the tape is applied. Ideally once the frame has been fully cleaned, degreased, and dried thoroughly clean with isopropanol ethanol.
  • Tools to Help with Installation
Squeegee with a felt strip edge or even a credit card with a micro fibre cloth wrapped along the edge will work - to help remove air bubbles Sharp knife/blade and Scissors Heat gun with adjustable temperature control or even a hair dryer Cleaning agent/shampoo Degreasing agent / isopropanol ethanol Micro fibre cleaning cloths for washing and drying For wet application only - Spray bottle with a slip solution, i.e. water 1L and 10 drops of very mild shampoo
  • How to Apply the Bike Frame Protection Kit – Dry Application Method
    1. In this example we will use applying the protection tape to the top tube, but the process is the same for all areas. 2. Choose the first custom shape that you wish apply and then cut the shape out by cutting along the backing paper. Do not remove the backing paper at this time. 3. With the backing paper still in place offer the tape up to the frame so that you can check the fit is good. If required, you can cut or trim any obvious excess parts of the tape. Remember, less is more. You can always trim excess tape off later. 4. Once you’re happy with the fit apply a little heat to the tape, this will make it slightly more flexible and easier to apply, especially if curves or contours are involved. 5. Make sure your hands are clean and free from grease or dirt. You do not want to transfer fingerprints onto the adhesive side of the tape. 6. Remove the backing paper, hold the tape on the very edges and gently place the tape into position. Check that you happy with the alignment, if not lift the tape and adjust the alignment/positioning. 7. You can trim any obvious excess or overlapping parts of the tape at this time if required. 8. Once you’re happy with the position of the tape, starting from the middle/centre and moving towards to outer edges use your squeegee to gently smooth the tape down and into position. Do not use apply to much force/pressure at this time. 9. If your need to ‘deform’ the vinyl around any obstructions a little more heat can be used to aid this process. 10. Double check again that your happy with the positioning and again any excess parts can be trimmed away. Then use increased force/pressure to smooth out the tape and remove any air bubbles. 11. Depending on the colour of your frame the tape may not look crystal clear. However, as the adhesive fully bonds to your frame over the next day or so, the tape will then achieve its full transparency look.

  • Maintenance and Cleaning
Ideally leave the bike inside for at least one night/24 hours for the tape to bond before riding outside. If using the wet application method this make take longer to fully dry out. Wait at least 72 hours before washing your bike After that you can wash your bike as normal with a good quality bike shampoo Avoid using strong chemical products use as isopropanol’s, citrus cleanser, harsh chemical shampoos. These can damage the film.
  • Vinyl Removal
You must always heat up the film and bike frame to around 50C using a hairdryer or heat gun before removing the film. Once the film has been heated gently lift at the edges and up pull it off at an angle to minimise leaving traces of adhesive. If there are any traces of adhesive left these can be easily cleaned off using isopropanol ethanol
